TEKS 5.9: Patterns in Sun, Earth, and Moon System
Earth's Movement
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can explain what causes day and night cycles, and identify patterns in the sky because of it.
Focuses On:
- Earth's rotation
- The Sun's pattern of rising and setting
Builds On:
K.9A:
identify, describe, and predict the patterns of day and night and their observable characteristics
Next Level:
6.9A:
model and illustrate how the tilted Earth revolves around the Sun, causing changes in seasons
6.9B:
describe and predict how the positions of the Earth, Sun, and Moon cause daily, spring, and neap cycles of ocean tides due to gravitational forces

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of Earth's rotation and the patterns it creates.
The lesson begins by explaining how Earth's counterclockwise rotation every 24 hours causes the cycle of day, when a hemisphere faces the Sun, and night, when it faces away. Students will then visually model and recognize the consistent pattern of the sun appearing to rise in the east and set in the west.
This lesson provides the foundational understanding necessary for more complex patterns within the Sun, Earth, and Moon system in 6th grade.
