TEKS 5.8B: Process for Graphing Ordered Pairs
The Coordinate Plane
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can describe and use the coordinate plane to find and graph points using ordered pairs.
Focuses On:
- Identifying the different parts of the coordinate plane
- Describing how to graph an ordered pair on a coordinate plane
Builds On:
4.3G:
Represent fractions and decimals to the tenths or hundredths as distances from zero on a number line.
Next Level:
6.11A:
Graph points in all four quadrants using ordered pairs of rational numbers.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the terms associated with a coordinate plane and how to find an ordered pair on the coordinate grid.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson are the coordinate plane and the process of graphing.
The first instructional block begins by showing students examples of each part of the coordinate plane including: x-coordinate, y-coordinate, origin, ordered pair, x-axis, and y- axis. Students use these terms to describe the coordinate plane.
The second instructional block has students explain the steps to find a point represented by an ordered pair on a coordinate plane.
The lesson can be taught with 5.8B. It must be taught before 5.8C, 5.4C, and 5.4D.
