This lesson is designed to build student conceptual understanding of dividing fractions through models.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson are divide whole numbers by unit fractions and divide unit fractions by whole numbers.
The first instructional block begins by having students divide whole numbers by unit fractions with the support of models. Students will practice partitioning whole numbers into unit fractions in the context of real-world problems.
The second instructional block has students dividing unit fractions by whole numbers. Students will practice creating models to represent division problems and then use the models to find a solution.
Intentional scaffolds are built throughout the lesson to further develop student understanding and support struggling learners.
