TEKS 5.3F: Represent Decimal Quotients
Represent Decimal Division Using Models
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can represent decimals using objects and models.
Focuses On:
- Using a decimal model to create equal groups
- Dividing decimals by whole numbers
- Using complex models to represent scenarios
Builds On:
5th grade is the first time students divide decimals
Next Level:
5.3G:
Solve for quotients of hundredths, up to four-digit and two-digit whole number divisors, using strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm

This lesson is designed to solely represent decimal division without an emphasis on solving the problem. Students use models to show equal groupings and the quotient. This builds conceptual understanding for using the standard algorithm in later lessons.
The three instructional blocks in this lesson are decimal division-models, equations to models and complex models.
The first instructional block focuses on dividing whole numbers by decimals and decimals by whole numbers, all through the use of models.
The second instructional block has students identify which models correctly represent various decimal division equations.
The third instructional block culminates with complex models and extended thinking using whole numbers and decimals divided into equal groups. For example, 6.25 ÷ 3. Students build equations based on models to understand each component of the equation.
This builds the foundation for dividing decimals.
