TEKS 5.3E: Solve Decimal Products
Multiplying Decimals Using the Standard Algorithm
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can multiply decimals to the hundredths using the standard algorithm.
Focuses On:
- Multiplying decimals using the standard algorithm
- Understanding how to place the decimal in the product
Builds On:
5.3D:
Represent multiplication of decimals with products to the hundredths using objects and pictorial models, including area models
4.4D:
Use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number and to multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number
Next Level:
6.3E:
Multiply and divide positive rational numbers fluently

This lesson is designed to extend student understanding of using the standard algorithm to multiplying decimal numbers.
The two instructional blocks focus on the standard algorithm and word problems.
The first instructional block walks students through the process of how to place the decimal correctly in the product. Students then practice using the standard algorithm.
The second instructional block progresses into solving word problems that require multiplying decimal numbers.
This lesson does not utilize models, as that is covered in the previous lesson for standard 5.3D.
