TEKS 5.3D: Represent Decimal Multiplication
Multiply Decimals Using Models
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can use models and area grids to represent and solve decimal multiplication problems to the hundredths.
Focuses On:
- Understanding decimal models
- Multiplying a decimal by a decimal using a model to understand the overlap as the product
- Multiplying a whole number by a decimal using models
Builds On:
5th Grade is the first time students are multiplying decimals.
Next Level:
5.3E:
Solve for products of decimals to the hundredths, including situations involving money, using strategies based on place-value understandings, properties of operations, and the relationship to the multiplication of whole numbers
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support student understanding of how decimal models can show multiplication.
The two instructional blocks are multiplying a decimal by a decimal and multiplying a decimal by a whole number.
In the first instructional block, students practice multiplying a decimal by a decimal with models, using the overlap to indicate the product.
The second instructional block moves into multiplying a whole number by a decimal, using grouping models to show the product.
As this concept is new for students, scaffolding is built in through Skill Builder instruction and checkpoints to ensure understanding of decimal models as that is the foundation of the concept.
The lesson builds towards 5.3E where students solve decimal multiplication.
