TEKS 5.2B: Compare and Order Decimals
Compare Decimals to the Thousandths
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can compare decimals to the thousandths place using the symbols <, >, or =.
Focuses On:
- Comparing decimals to the thousandths place using the correct sign
- Determining equivalent decimals that may look different because of zeros
Builds On:
4.2F:
Compare and order decimals using concrete and visual models to the hundredths.
Next Level:
6.2D:
Order a set of rational numbers arising from mathematical and real‐world contexts.
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support student understanding of comparing decimals to the thousandths place.
The first instructional block has students compare decimals to the tenths.
The second instructional block focuses on comparing decimals to the hundredths.
Finally, the third instructional block has students comparing decimals to the thousandths. Students are challenged by comparing numbers where zeros are used after the last decimal - for example 2.5 = 2.500.
This lesson can be taught along side 5.2A as students need to identify the place value of digits in decimals as they compare them.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of ordering decimals to the thousandths place by focusing on place value.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on ordering decimals from least to greatest and then greatest to least.
The first instructional block has students ordering decimals from least to greatest. They are working with groups of decimals in the tenths, hundredths and thousandths places.
The second instructional block is similar to the first block except they will order decimals from greatest to least.
This lesson should be taught after "Comparing Decimals to the Thousandths."
