TEKS 5.2A: Value of Digits in Decimals
Decimal Place Values Through Thousandths
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can identify the place value of digits in a decimal number.
Focuses On:
- Determining the place value of a given number to the thousandths
- Determining the digit that is in a given place value to the thousandths
- Representing a number to the thousandths in word form
Builds On:
4.2F:
Compare and order decimals using concrete and visual models to the hundredths.
Next Level:
6.2D:
Order a set of rational numbers arising from mathematical and real‐world contexts.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the value of each digit to the thousandths in a number and how to read that number.
The lesson begins by reviewing place value. The two instructional blocks focus on decimal place value and word form.
The first instructional block has students identify the place value of a given digit in a number or identify the digit that is in a given place value.
The second instructional block progresses in difficulty as students match a standard form decimal to its matching word form.
This lesson continues to build knowledge of the value of digits to the thousandths to prepare students expanded notation and for comparing and ordering decimals, 5.2B. This lesson should be completed before "Expanded Notation through the Thousandths."
Grade 5MathTEKS 5.2AExpanded Notation Through Thousandths
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can represent the value of digits in decimals through the thousandths using expanded notation.
Focuses On:
- Writing a number containing decimals to the thousandths in expanded notation
- Identifying the number represented by expanded notation through the thousandths
Builds On:
4.2F:
Compare and order decimals using concrete and visual models to the hundredths.
Next Level:
6.2D:
Order a set of rational numbers arising from mathematical and real‐world contexts.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the value of each digit to the thousandths in a number and how to represent that value using expanded notation.
The lesson begins by reviewing place value and walking students step by step through the process of representing a number to the thousandths using expanded notation. It continues as students complete this skill with lesser supports. Students are then asked to identify the number that an expanded notation equation represents.
This lesson continues to build knowledge of the value of digits to the thousandths to prepare students for comparing and ordering decimals, 5.2B.
