This lesson is designed to support student understanding of a claim and how to identify the claim in an argumentative text. Students begin by completing a paragraph with the correct homophone and analyzing the characteristics of argumentative texts.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying the claim in argumentative texts. In the first instructional block students review the characteristics of a claim and work to identify the claim in various argumentative texts.
In the second instructional block students examine two argumentative texts that contain opposing claims. Students identify the claim in each and discuss how they are different.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning in context.
