This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the setting and how it can influence the plot of a text. Students begin by completing sentences with an appropriate preposition and matching the event of a text to the corresponding plot element.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying how the setting influences the plot in a variety of different ways. In the first instructional block students read a passage and then identify the setting. Students examine how the setting effects the characters and events in a text and use evidence from the text to support their ideas.
In the second instructional block students consider the historical or cultural elements of the setting and how that influences and effects the plot of the text.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
