This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the elements of plot, how they are used to create a story, and how each element effects the overall story. Students begin by combining two shorter sentences into a complex or compound sentence and organizing sentences into the category of a problem or solution.
The instructional block in this lesson focuses on analyzing the plot. Students begin by defining each element of the plot. Students then look at how the different plot elements keep a story moving or determine importance. Students are asked to draw evidence from the text in order to support their ideas.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
