This lesson is designed to support students in understanding the relationships between characters in a text and identifying and explaining the types of conflict present. Students begin by using vocabulary words to describe characters' behaviors and then differentiating between the actions and feelings of characters.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on describing character relationships and supporting with text evidence along with identifying the types of conflict that are present in a text. In the first instructional block students analyze the relationship between characters and support their ideas with evidence from the text.
In the second instructional block students determine if the conflict present in a text is an internal or external conflict. This is also supported with evidence from a text.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
