This lesson is designed to support student understanding of theme and how to infer the theme of a text. Students begin by categorizing movies based on their titles and summaries. Students then practice determining the difference between a topic and theme.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on determining the theme of a text. In the first instructional block students are introduced to the meaning of theme and walk through important steps to determine theme.
In the second instructional block students use inferencing skills to determine the theme in a variety of texts. Students use evidence from the text to support their ideas.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
