This lesson is designed to support student understanding of summarizing and paraphrasing texts. Students begin by sorting words by syllables and exploring what a summary is by looking at the main idea and details.
The three instructional blocks in this lesson focus on summarizing, paraphrasing and analyzing a variety of texts. In the first instructional block students identify the important components of a summary and complete the missing parts of a given summary.
In the second instructional, students are asked to paraphrase certain parts of a text and to analyze paraphrases for common mistakes.
In the final instructional block, students analyze given summaries to determine common mistakes. Students choose the correct summary and explain why other summaries are not the best choice.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to provide practice and analysis.
