This lesson is designed to support student understanding of how an author's language and word choice can be used to create a specific voice in a passage. Students begin by sorting complete and incomplete sentences and determining the author's voice in simple paragraphs.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying the voice the author creates in a text and identifying language in the text that contributes to that voice. In the first instructional block students focus on determining the voice that is used in a variety of different passages.
In the second instructional block students find text evidence that help to create the given voice in a text.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to provide practice and analysis.
