This lesson is designed to support student understanding of print and graphic features, how they can be used to communicate a variety of information, and the author's purpose for including them in a text. Students begin by completing sentences with commonly used words and identifying common text features.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying common print and graphic features and determining how the author uses these features to clearly communicate information. In the first instructional block students are introduced to headings, bold print, italic print, and bulleted lists. Students determine the information given and the author's purpose for including each in a text.
In the second instructional block students are introduced to graphic features such as maps, charts, timelines, diagrams, and photographs. Students determine the information given and the author's purpose for including each in a text.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
