This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the different text structures and the author's purpose for using each. Students begin by completing sentences with the correct form of your/you're and identifying common text structures.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on how the text structure of a passage is used to contribute to the author's purpose. In the first instructional block students are introduced to the problem and solution, cause and effect, chronological order, description, and compare and contrast text structures. Students then identify which of these text structures are used in a variety of passages.
In the second instructional block students analyze the author's purpose for choosing the text structure in a variety of different texts.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
