        This lesson is designed to support student understand of the author's purpose for writing a passage and the author's message within a passage. Students begin by sorting words with r-controlled vowels and defining and using the word purpose.


        The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying the author's purpose and message within a text. In the first instructional block students identify the author's purpose for writing entire selections and the author's purpose for different paragraphs or sections of text.


        In the second instructional block students identify the author's message in a text and give text evidence to support the message.


        Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
