TEKS 4.6C: Conservation of Matter in Mixtures
Conservation of Matter
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can use my knowledge of conservation of matter to determine missing values.
Focuses On:
- Conservation of matter through combining and separating mixtures.
Builds On:
This is the first time that students are introduces to the theory of conservation of matter.
Next Level:
5.6C:
compare the properties of substances before and after they are combined into a solution and demonstrate that matter is conserved in solutions
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support students' understanding of the conservation of matter by using a scale to combine and find missing values.
The lesson begins by introducing the topic and having students add the masses of individual components of a mixture to find the total mass. It then challenges students to use their knowledge of this concept to subtract known values from the total to find the mass of a last component with an unknown mass.
The lesson prepares students for standard 5.6C, where they will apply this knowledge of conservation of mass to solutions in which the individual components are not visible.
