TEKS 4.6C: Identify Angles
Classify Triangles
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can identify acute, obtuse, and right triangles using my knowledge of right angles.
Focuses On:
- Sorting triangles based on their angles
- Naming triangles by explaining its angles
Builds On:
3.6A:
Classify and sort two- and three-dimensional figures, including cones, cylinders, spheres, triangular and rectangular prisms, and cubes, based on attributes using formal geometric language.
Next Level:
5.5A:
Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using graphic organizers based on their attributes and properties.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the angles in triangles and how they can be used to classify triangles as acute, obtuse, or right.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on classifying triangles and triangle riddles.
In the first instructional block, students are introduced to the types of triangles and the angles they each posses. Students then complete activities to practice classifying acute, obtuse, and right triangles.
The second instructional block focuses on solving triangle riddles by reading descriptions of triangles and determining the type of triangle being described and why.
Scaffolds and supports such as pictorial representations and visual models are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.
