TEKS 4.6A: Identify Geometric Elements
Apply Understanding of Points, Lines, and Angles
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can identify points, lines, and angles and apply understanding to solve problems.
Focuses On:
- Defining geometry terms such as point, line segment, line, ray, angle, perpendicular and parallel lines
- Using geometry terms to describe real life objects
Builds On:
3.6A:
Classify and sort two- and three-dimensional figures, including cones, cylinders, spheres, triangular and rectangular prisms, and cubes, based on attributes using formal geometric language.
Next Level:
5.5A:
Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using graphic organizers based on their attributes and properties.
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the geometric terms: point, line segment, line, ray, angle, perpendicular lines, and parallel lines. Student are asked to identify each of these geometric terms in math and real-life situations.
The first instructional block in this lesson focuses on points and lines and the second block is focused on angles.
In the first instructional block, students focus on points, lines, and line segments. Students must classify examples of each.
The second instructional block shifts to exploring angles and rays, and finally to parallel and perpendicular lines. Students are asked to find examples of each of these terms in real-life situations as well.
Visual representations are built into the lesson to support student understanding.
