TEKS 4.4D: Multiply Using Strategies and Algorithms
Multi-Digit Multiplication
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can use strategies and algorithms to multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number and a two-digit number by a two-digit number.
Focuses On:
- Using partial product to solve multi-digit multiplication problems
- Using the standard algorithm to solve multi-digit multiplication problems
- Solving multi-digit multiplication problems in context of real-world problems
Builds On:
4.4H:
Solve with fluency one- and two-step problems involving multiplication and division, including interpreting remainders
Next Level:
5.3B:
Multiply with fluency a three-digit number by a two-digit number using the standard algorithm
Read More:
This lesson is designed to move students into multiplication fluency using the standard algorithm by bridging between partial product and the algorithm.
The three instructional blocks in this lesson are partial products, standard algorithm and word problems.
In the first instructional block students are introduced to the partial products strategy to solve multiplication problems. Students will practice breaking apart the place values of numbers in order to make multiplying easier.
The second instructional block has students use the standard algorithm to solve multiplication problems.
Finally, students will choose a method to solve real-world multi-digit multiplication problems in the third instructional block.
Supported expressions and visual models are built into the lesson to support student understanding.

About this lesson
Learning Target: I can use the properties of multiplication to multiply.
Focuses On:
- The commutative, associative, and distributive properties of multiplication
Builds On:
3.4H:
Determine the number of objects in each group when a set of objects is partitioned into equal shares or a set of objects is shared equally
Next Level:
4.4H:
Solve with fluency one- and two-step problems involving multiplication and division including interpreting remainders

This lesson is designed to help students recognize and use the properties of multiplication to solve problems. These concepts build deep understanding of how to use multiplication and division and prepare students for more complex concepts in algebra.
The three instructional blocks are the commutative, associative and distributive property.
In the first instructional block, students practice determining corresponding equations and solving multiplication problems using the principles of the commutative property.
The second instructional block has students using the associative property to solve multiplication problems. Students practice regrouping expressions to make them easier to solve.
The third instructional block introduces the students to the distributive property. Students are exposed to this property as a way to build the foundation for pre-algebra.
Scaffolds and supports such as visual models and pictorial representations are built into the lesson to support student understanding.
