TEKS 4.3G: Represent Fractions and Decimals on Number Line
Represent Decimals to the Tenths on a Number Line 4.3G
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can represent decimals to the tenths on a number line.
Focuses On:
- Using number lines to represent tenths within 3 whole
- Using open number lines and spatial recognition to approximate decimals
Builds On:
4th Grade is the first time students see decimals outside of the context of money.
Next Level:
There is not a direct correlation to a 5th grade standard.
Read More:
This lesson is designed to build foundational understanding of tenths using number lines. The lesson begins with individually marked tenths and builds towards open number lines for students to approximate location.
The two instructional blocks are tenths on a number line and tenths between whole numbers.
This first instructional block has students determine which point on a number represents a given decimal. Students will also practice labeling number lines with tick marks and then placing the correct decimals in the correction position on the number line.
The second instructional block has students matching decimals with the correct points on number lines that go from 0 to 3. Students also approximate where a given decimal would land on a given number line.
Supports and scaffolds such as visual representations of number lines are built into the lesson to support conceptual understanding.

This lesson is designed to build foundational understanding of hundredths using number lines. The lesson begins with individually marked hundredths between two tenths and builds towards open number lines for students to approximate location.
The three instructional blocks in this lesson are tenths to hundredths, approximate location and open number lines.
The first instructional block has students create tick marks on number lines, label the number lines and then place specific decimals on the number lines.
The second instructional block has students approximating where decimals in the hundredths would be located on number lines.
The final instructional block exposes students to open number lines and has students placing points on the line based on the information they are given.
Scaffolds such as visual models of number lines are built into the lesson to support student understanding.
