TEKS 4.3E: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
Add and Subtract Fractions Using Models
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can add and subtract fractions using models.
Focuses On:
- Adding and subtracting fractions using models in a set
- Adding fractions with a sum more than one using models
Builds On:
3.3C:
Explain that the unit fraction 1/b represents the quantity formed by one part of a whole that has been partitioned into b equal parts where b is a non‐zero whole number.
3.3D:
Compose and decompose a fraction a/b with a numerator greater than zero and less than or equal to b as a sum of parts 1/b.
Next Level:
5.3H:
Represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with unequal denominators referring to the same whole using objects and pictorial models and properties of operations.
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support student understanding of adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator using models. It includes adding fractions that have a sum greater than one whole.
The three instructional blocks in this lesson are add fractions of a set, fractions greater than one and subtract with models.
In the first instructional block, students add fractional amounts using models in a set. Support is given as students are given partially complete equations.
The second instructional block progresses in difficulty as students are asked to add fractional amounts that will have a sum greater than one, but models are still used as support.
The third instructional block concludes as students subtract fractions given models to assist.
Scaffolds such as visual models and partially completed equations are provided to support student understanding throughout the lesson.
Grade 4MathTEKS 4.3EAdd and Subtract Fractions with Common Denominators
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can add and subtract fractions with common denominators.
Focuses On:
- Adding fractions with common denominators
- Subtracting fractions with common denominators
- Solving two-step word problems involving adding a subtracting fractions with common denominators
- Adding and subtracting mixed numbers

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators, including fractions greater than one.
The three instructional blocks in this lesson are add and subtract fractions, two-step problems and add and subtract mixed numbers.
The first instructional block begins by walking students through the process of adding or subtracting simple fractions with common denominators.
The second instructional block progresses as students must solve two-step problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions.
In the final instructional block, students add and subtract mixed numbers. Students are taught to first add or subtract the whole numbers and then the fractional amounts.
Partially completed equations are built into the lesson to scaffold understanding.
