TEKS 4.2H: Determine Corresponding Decimals
Determine Decimals to the Tenths on a Number Line 4.2H
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can determine a decimal to the tenths on a number line.
Focuses On:
- Associating a point on a number line with a decimal number
- Using horizontal and vertical number lines
Builds On:
4th Grade is the first time students see decimals outside of the context of money.
Next Level:
There is not a direct correlation to a 5th grade standard.
Read More:
This lesson is designed to move students from representing decimals to seeing a point and determining the correlating decimal.
The two instructional blocks for this lesson are consecutive whole numbers and non-consecutive whole numbers.
In the first instructional block, students will look at vertical and horizontal number lines and practice determining the decimal that is represented by a point on the line. The decimals in this block will be located between consecutive whole numbers.
In the second instructional block students progress from using points within two consecutive whole numbers to seeing points between non consecutive whole numbers. Students will determine the decimal associated with specific points on both horizontal and vertical number lines.
Scaffolds such as visual representations of horizontal and vertical numbers lines are built into the lesson to support student understanding.
