Convert Decimals to Fractions
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can convert fractions to decimals.
Focuses On:
- Writing fractions for simple decimal values to the tenths and hundredths
- Writing mixed numbers for whole number and decimal values to the tenths and hundredths
- Writing improper fractions for whole number and decimal values to the tenths and hundredths
Builds On:
3.3 F:
Represent equivalent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 using a variety of objects and pictorial models, including number lines.
4.3G:
Represent fractions and decimals to the tenths or hundredths as distances from zero on a number line.
Next Level:

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the relationship between decimals and fractions including whole numbers with decimals and mixed numbers or improper fractions.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson are convert decimals to fractions and convert decimals to mixed numbers.
The first instructional block begins as students are asked to name fractions that represent the same value as simple decimal values to the tenths and hundredths.
The second instructional block progresses in complexity as students are presented with whole numbers and decimals and students are asked to write the mixed number and then improper fraction that these decimals represent.
Scaffolds such as place value chart are built into the lesson to support student understanding.
