TEKS 4.2F: Compare and Order Decimals
Compare Decimals to the Hundredths with Models
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can compare decimals to the hundredths using models.
Focuses On:
- Identifying the decimal number that is represented by a model
- Creating a model to represent a decimal to the hundredths
- Comparing models using inequality symbols
Builds On:
Aside from money, 4th grade is the first time students interact with decimal numbers.
Next Level:
5.2B:
Compare and order two decimals to thousandths and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support visual understanding of decimal numbers in order to compare them.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on creating decimal models and comparing decimal models.
In the first instructional block, students identify what decimal number is represented by a model. The hundreds mat is used to represent one whole with each piece representing one-hundredth.
The second instructional block focuses on comparing two decimals to the hundredths using inequality symbols. Students will continue to practice identifying the decimal represented by a model, and then compare two models and numbers using inequality symbols.
The lesson includes intentional scaffolds to support student understanding of the models prior to comparing and to support conceptual learning.

About this lesson
Learning Target: I can use decimal models to order decimals from least to greatest or greatest to least.
Focuses On:
- Determining the decimal number from a model
- Ordering three decimal numbers
- Understanding "greatest to least" vs. "least to greatest"
Builds On:
Aside from money, 4th grade is the first time students interact with decimal numbers.
Next Level:
5.2B:
Compare and order two decimals to thousandths and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =
Read More:
This lesson is designed to continue understanding of comparing decimal numbers by placing them in order from greatest to least or least to greatest.
The instructional block in this lesson has students working with models to anchor their understanding of decimals. Students will practice determining the decimal numbers represented by models and then ordering them. Students order three decimals to the hundredths from "greatest to least" and "least to greatest." Decimals in the form of money are presented as a way to contextualize how and when students may see and use these numbers.
Scaffolds and supports such as models and visual representations are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.
