This lesson focuses on using the place value chart to understand which digit is being rounded and how to round to any place value, even in larger numbers. By the end of the lesson, students practice rounding numbers without the scaffold of a place value chart in real-world problems.
This lesson is broken into three instructional blocks to support rounding to the thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands place. This allows students to build connections between the concept of rounding and eliminate fear over large numbers.
The first instructional block has students rounding numbers to the nearest thousand. Students are given explicit directions of how to round a number in this instructional block and the place value chart is used to visualize the digits.
Students practice rounding to the nearest ten thousand in the second instructional block. Using the same strategies as the first instructional block, students have the opportunity to first use a place value chart, and then are asked to round by just looking at the numbers.
The final instructional block has students rounding numbers to the nearest hundred-thousand. They will continue to use the strategies they practiced in the first two blocks and apply these when rounding numbers to the nearest hundred-thousand. As with the first two blocks, students will practice rounding numbers in real world context.
Scaffolds and supports such as empty place value charts are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.
