        This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the meaning of theme, how to infer the theme of a text, and how to confirm the theme with supporting evidence. Students begin by sorting words based on the meaning of their prefixes and distinguishing between the topic and theme in a text.


        The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on inferring the theme of a text and supporting that inference with text evidence. In the first instructional block students analyze character behavior and events in the plot to infer the theme of a text.


        In the second instructional block students still infer the theme but must also support that inference with text evidence from the passage.
