This lesson is designed to support student understanding of how to synthesize information in various parts of a text to make conclusions or create a new understanding. Students begin by completing a paragraph with words that contain silent letters and by practicing synthesizing information in the form of clues to change understanding.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on combining information in nonfiction and fiction texts to come to a conclusion.
In the first instructional block students synthesize information in nonfiction texts to make conclusions about the topic of the passage.
In the second instructional block students synthesize information in fictional texts to make conclusions about the passage.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
