This lesson is designed to support students understanding of words with affixes, how to use affixes to determine meaning, and how to use words with affixes in text. Students begin by practicing using words with silent letters and brainstorming common prefixes and suffixes.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on determining the meaning of and using words with prefixes and/or suffixes.
In the first instructional block students define words with prefixes by identifying the base word and the meaning of the prefix being used.
In the second instructional block students define words with suffixes by identifying the base word and the meaning of the suffix being used.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
