This lesson is designed to support student understanding of anecdotes and why they are used in texts. Students begin by using high frequency words to complete a paragraph and determine if a sentence is fiction or nonfiction.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying anecdotes in a text and explaining their purpose in the text. In the first instructional block students learn the characteristics of anecdotes and find examples in passages.
In the second instructional block students explain why certain anecdotes are used in a passage.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
