This lesson is designed to support student understanding of text structures and the purpose for using each. Students begin by using vocabulary skills to complete sentences and reviewing various text structures.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on explaining the purpose of different text structures and why they are used in different types of text. In the first instructional block students identify various structures and choose the best structure given a short description of a text.
In the second instructional block students identify the text structure used in passages and explain the author's purpose for choosing those structures.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
