        This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the author's purpose for writing a text and the author's message in a text. Students begin by sorting words based on the spelling rule you use to add -ing to the ending and reviewing the characteristics of fiction and nonfiction texts.


        The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on explaining the author's purpose and message in a text.


        In the first instructional block students explain the author's purpose for writing a variety of different texts. Students practice identifying the purpose for writing a text including to: persuade, inform, entertain and describe.


        In the second instructional block students identify and explain the author's message in a text by looking for problems the character faces and how they solve the problems.


        Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
