TEKS 3.7E: Measuring Volume and Weight
Determine Volume Using Tools
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can determine the liquid volume (capacity) of an object using units and tools.
Focuses On:
- Understanding metric and customary units
- Relating commonly measured liquids to their appropriate size
- Using measuring cups and beakers to measure liquids
Builds On:
Measuring volume using tools is a new concept at the 3rd grade level.
Next Level:
4.8C:
Solve problems that deal with measurements of length, intervals of time, liquid volumes, mass, and money using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division as appropriate
Read More:
This lesson is designed to build foundational vocabulary for determining volume in the metric and customary measuring systems.
The three instructional blocks are metric volume, customary volume and measuring volume.
The first instructional block focuses on establishing connections between liquid volumes and their respective liter or mL quantities.
The second instructional block moves into the customary measuring system, building connections between units of measurement and commonly measured items, such as a pitcher or a bathtub.
The third instructional block concludes with teaching students to use beakers or measuring cups to measure liquid volumes.
Pictorial representations are intentionally integrated into the lesson in order to support conceptual understanding.
Grade 3MathTEKS 3.7EDetermine Weight Using Tools
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can find the weight of objects.
Focuses On:
- Foundational vocabulary in the metric and customary measurement systems
- Correlating common objects to the appropriate measurement unit
Builds On:
Measuring weight using tools is a new concept at the 3rd grade level.
Next Level:
4.8C:
Solve problems that deal with measurements of length, intervals of time, liquid volumes, mass, and money using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division as appropriate

This lesson is designed to build foundational understanding of measurement units in the customary and metric measurement systems. It works through both systems to help students correlate common objects to the appropriate unit.
The three instructional blocks are metric weight, customary weight and using a scale.
The first instructional block focuses on explaining that metric units measures how heavy something is in grams or kilograms.
The second instructional block moves into the customary measuring system, outlining how we measure using ounces, pounds and tons.
The third instructional block concludes by supporting student understanding on how to use a scale to measure items.
Pictorial representations are intentionally integrated into the lesson in order to support conceptual understanding.
