TEKS 3.6B: Recognizing and Drawing Quadrilaterals
Quadrilaterals
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can use attributes to identify quadrilaterals and non-quadrilaterals.
Focuses On:
- Understanding the quadrilateral hierarchy by examining which shapes fall under which categories and why
- Identifying quadrilaterals based on attributes
Builds On:
Understanding quadrilaterals, including vocabulary and hierarchy, is a new skill in 3rd grade. It builds upon 2.8C in 2nd grade, which covers classifying and sorting polygons without a specific focus on quadrilaterals.
Next Level:
While there is not a direct correlation to working with quadrilaterals in 4th grade, this standard builds the foundation to better understand 4.6D and to classify shapes based on parallel and perpendicular lines.
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support student understand of quadrilaterals and their relationships within a hierarchy. It helps students understand the vocabulary associated with shapes and attributes..
The two instructional blocks focus on the quadrilateral hierarchy and quadrilateral puzzles.
The first instructional block has students examine quadrilaterals in order to look for special attributes such as equal sides or parallel lines which helps categorize them.
The second instructional block gives students the opportunity to identify different quadrilaterals within the context of a puzzle.
Visual models of shapes and pictorial representations are integrated throughout the lesson in order to support student understanding.
