TEKS 3.5C: Multiplication as Comparison
Multiplicative Comparison
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can analyze and create multiplicative patterns and comparisons.
Focuses On:
- Extending concrete knowledge of multiplication as a comparison
- Determining a multiplication equation given a written comparison statement
Builds On:
2.6A:
Model, create, and describe contextual multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of concrete objects are joined.
Next Level:
4.4H:
Solve with fluency one- and two-step problems involving multiplication and division, including interpreting remainders.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of multiplication as a comparison statement in which one factor is that times as large as the other factor.
In the first instructional block, students explore the concept of multiplicative comparisons and in the second instructional block students focus on multiplicative comparisons using equations.
In the first instructional block, students construct multiplicative comparisons by analyzing problems that compare two amounts.
The second instructional block has students construct multiplicative comparisons by analyzing expressions.
The lesson provides students with many models to help explain each multiplicative comparison statement. Additional scaffolds such as supported expressions are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.
