TEKS 3.3E: Partitioning Objects with Fractions
Fraction Shares Using Models
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can solve problems sharing part of the whole and identify the fraction each person receives.
Focuses On:
- Using a group of objects as "the whole" to divide out and determine the fraction of "one-whole"
- Understanding the denominator as the total number of pieces and the numerator as the number of pieces each person receives
Builds On:
This is the first time students are seeing this skill.
Next Level:
While there is not a direct correlation to a 4th grade standard, this lesson conceptually sets the foundation for dividing fractions.
Read More:
This lesson is designed to support student understanding that a collection is "one-whole" and that collection can be divided into equal groups.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on fraction shares and fraction of the whole.
In the first instructional block, students are asked to divide up a collection or group of objects equally and this is linked to the concept of determining the numerator and denominator of a fraction.
The second instructional block focuses on determining the fraction of a whole that is being shared or divided up.
Scaffolds and supports such as models and pictorial representations are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.
