TEKS 3.3C: Unit Fractions
Unit Fractions
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can explain that the fraction 1/b shows one part of a whole that is divided into b equal parts, where b is a number greater than zero.
Focuses On:
- Identifying and representing unit fractions using models
- Explaining the meaning of numerators and denominators in unit fractions
- Understanding that a unit fraction represents one part of an object divided into equal shares
Builds On:
2.3A:
Partition objects into equal parts and name the parts, including halves, fourths, and eighths, using words.
Next Level:
4.3E:
Represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with equal denominators using objects and pictorial models that build to the number line and properties of operations

This lesson is designed to support student conceptual understanding of unit fractions and build a foundation for adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators in fourth grade.
The first instructional block focuses on identifying and labeling models that represent unit fractions.
The second instructional block has students choose statements that correctly explain unit fractions and explain why models do or do not represent unit fractions.
Scaffolds such as supported expressions and visual models are intentionally integrated throughout the lesson in order to support conceptual understanding.
