TEKS 3.2D: Comparing and Ordering Numbers
Compare Whole Numbers up to 100,000
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can compare whole numbers up to 100,000 using comparison symbols.
Focuses On:
- Comparing two numbers up to the hundred thousands place using comparison symbols utilizing a place value chart
- Comparing two numbers up to the hundred thousands place using comparison symbols without the support of a place value chart
Builds On:
2.2D:
Using place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 1,200 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols
Next Level:
4.2C:
Compare and order whole numbers to 1,000,000,000 and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of comparison symbols, comparison language, and the place value chart. Students use the place value chart as a support in foundational understanding that a greater digit in a place value creates a greater number overall.
The lesson starts using the support of a place value chart in the first instructional block and gradually releases students to compare two numbers without the immediate support of a place value chart in the second instructional block.
It builds upon foundations for comparing numbers established in 3rd grade and sets students up for success to compare larger numbers in 5th grade. This lesson prepares students to be able to order numbers, which is covered in a separate lesson.
Place value charts, models, and example problems are given to support teacher instruction and autonomy as well as student understanding.
Grade 3MathTEKS 3.2DOrder Whole Numbers Up To 100,000
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can order whole numbers up to 100,000.
Focuses On:
- Order up to 4 numbers from least to greatest and then greatest to least
- Answering real world problems based on ordering numbers
Builds On:
2.2D:
Using place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 1,200 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols
Next Level:
4.2C:
Compare and order whole numbers to 1,000,000,000 and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of ordering numbers least to greatest and greatest to least. Students use place value to compare and order numbers in real world contexts.
The first instructional focuses on students comparing and ordering numbers from least to greatest. The second instructional block focuses on comparing and ordering numbers from greatest to least. Finally, the third instructional block has students answer real world problems using place value to support their understanding of the least and greatest numbers in the problem.
This lesson builds upon foundations for ordering whole numbers in second grade and sets students up for success to compare larger numbers in 4th grade.
We suggest completing "Compare Whole Numbers up to 100,000" prior to completing this lesson as comparing numbers is the foundation for ordering numbers.
Place value charts, drag and drop activities, and example problems are given to support teacher instruction and autonomy as well as student understanding.
