The first instructional block has explicit instruction on the difference between a topic and theme, using examples from stories to support the identification of both topic and theme to help students differentiate.
The second instructional block focuses on finding evidence in a text to support the identified theme.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning into context.
