This lesson is designed to support student understanding to understand the meaning of grade level specific prefixes and suffixes and how they impact the meaning of words. The lesson begins with a warmup to remind students what they already know about prefixes and suffixes, followed by an explicit example of how a prefix and suffix impact the base word "happy".
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on prefixes and suffixes. The first instructional block explicitly teaches the meaning of the prefixes im-, non-, dis-, in-, and pre-, allowing students to practice applying them to words to determine a new word meaning.
The second instructional block explicitly teaches the meaning of the suffixes -ness, -y, and -ful. This block gives students practice to identify and understand words using the suffixes in context of passages.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning into context.
