This lesson is designed to help students build strategies to use context from a passage or sentence to define unfamiliar words and words with multiple-meanings. Students begin with a warm up to sort prefixes.
The instructional blocks in this lesson focus on using context to define unfamiliar words and using context to define multiple meaning words. In the first instructional block, students focus on defining words and building strategies to identify the words within a sentence and passage that support the meaning.
The second instructional block focuses on using context to define words with multiple-meanings, such as "wave", "sharp", "watch", and "lean". Students are given the multiple definitions of a word and must determine the meaning based on the context of the sentence or passage.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning into context.
