This lesson is designed to support student understanding of homophone pairs. The lesson starts with a quick phonemic awareness activity followed by explicit instruction of homophones.
The three instructional blocks within this lesson pinpoint the following skills: identifying homophones, using homophones, understanding the meaning of homophones. The first instructional block gives plentiful examples for teachers to work through with students. It helps them identify homophone pairs in sentences and passages.
The second instructional block focuses on using homophones in a sentence or passage. This ensures students are able to choose the correct homophone based on the context.
The final instructional block ensure students understand the meaning of various homophones.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning into context.
