This lesson is designed to help students decode, spell, and understand prefixes and how they can impact word meaning. Students begin by identifying and sorting prefixes, followed by explicit instruction on base words and prefixes.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on decoding prefixes and spelling words with a base and prefix. In the first instructional block, students revisit common prefixes, their meaning, and how they impact base words. They move into breaking apart words with prefixes to identify the components and determine the meaning.
The second instructional block focuses on spelling words with prefixes by combining the two parts.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning into context.
