This lesson is designed to support student understanding of common print and graphic features and why an author would choose to include these in a text. Students begin by completing sentences with words with trigraphs.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on explaining the author's purpose for including a variety of text features in a text. In the first instructional block students look at examples of bold text and captions in a variety of passages and explain the author's purpose for using each.
In the second instructional block students look at examples of maps, graphs, illustrations, and photographs in a variety of passages and explain the author's purpose for using each.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to provide exposure to a variety of text features in meaningful texts.
