This lesson is designed to help students understand the type of text structures and an author's purpose and reasoning for using each. Students begin by sorting words based on blends and then students receive explicit instruction on the different types of text structures authors can use.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on determining the text structure used and analyzing the author's purpose for using the given text structure. In the first instructional block students must identify the text structure used in a text and then decide how it helps the author achieve their purpose for writing.
In the second instructional block students continue to identify the text structure used in a passage and analyze why an author might choose that structure.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to provide practice and analysis opportunities.
