        Read More:

This lesson is designed to help students determine the author's purpose for writing texts across genres and also for determining the author's message in many different types of text. Students begin by breaking apart words with digraphs "sh" and "th" and continue by defining the terms: author's purpose and author's message.

The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying the author's purpose and the author's message. In the first instructional block students read a variety of texts and determine the author's purpose for writing using a variety of verbs and descriptions. Author's purpose is not limited to one word in these activities.

In the second instructional block students are given a variety of texts and must infer the author's message based on the details in the passage.

Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to provide practice and analysis.
