TEKS 2.3B: Fraction Foundations
Fraction Parts
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can explain that a fraction model with less parts has larger parts.
Focuses On:
- Identifying how many fractional parts make up one whole
- Comparing the size of fractional parts to see which are larger and smaller
Builds On:
1.6G
Partition two-dimensional figures into two and four fair shares or equal parts and describe the parts using words.
Next Level:
3.3H
Compare two fractions having the same numerator or denominator in problems by reasoning about their sizes and justify the conclusion by using symbols, words, objects and pictorial models.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of fractional parts.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying fractional parts and comparing the size of fractional parts.
In the first instructional block, students use pictorial models to count fractional parts that make up one whole.
The second instructional block focuses on using pictorial representations to show that a smaller denominator means it is a bigger part of the whole and a larger denominator means that it is a smaller piece of the whole.
Scaffolds and supports such as modeling that fractions must be equal parts are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.
