This lesson is designed to support student understanding of partitioning objects into equal parts.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on partitioning objects into two, four and eight parts and naming those equal parts as halves, fourths and eighths using words.
In the first instructional block, students focus on partitioning wholes into equal fractional parts.
The second instructional block focuses on linking the equal parts to the correct names of halves, fourths and eighths.
Scaffolds and supports such as pictorial representations of halves, fourths and eighths are intentionally built in throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.
